Profiling Visual Artist behind the art, Ben Agbee

IMG_7387.JPGBen Agbee is one of the most successful Ghanaian artists, who has over the years
carved a niche for himself with extremely evocative works. He was inspired and directed by his uncle, Mr.Victor Ameyibor , who is also an outdoor advertising expert and a very versatile artist. Ben exhibits a talent that is marked original and vigorous .His paintings are vibrant and earthly colored , mainly of women in attractive clothing and incorporate unusual shapes.

His works consist of all kinds of all kinds of images, figures and symbols bordered on abstract, impressionism, landscapes and realism which lead to a myriad of interpretations. Ben Agbee has worked hard to provide for himself a platform to continuously devote his time to painting. His recent works resonate finely expressed forms of market women with a a controlled multiplicity of
colour and textures.

His use of the palette knife technique and brush work of the evokes silhouette forms gradually into unfinished yet plausible images. Agbee’s paintings constantly demonstrate his commitment to figurative compositions within market scenes, city scapes and music.

Ben has displayed his works in Ghana, Europe, Canada, Togo, the United states of America and New Zealand with some of his works being used for UNICEF post cards. His works are in numerous private collection worldwide. Ben generously donates part of his sales proceeds to assist young artists and to Opportunities Industrialization Centre where he was trained.

Some f his donations also go to the Cardio Thoraci Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in
Accra-Ghana.

Ben Agbee’s collections has been reproduced on carrier bags, greeting cards, book marks and calendars sold in America through Wall
Mart and Smith Sonia and other parts of the world.

Born in 1963 Nii T. Mills’s artistic skill dates far prior to his Art degree obtained from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 1987. He believes Fine art is a calling. That is the explanation he gave to the encounter he had which took hold of him since his chidhood and wresteld with him through his youth all the way to adulthood. A compultion which grips him even today.

He was called into fine art quite early inspite of himself, Like many other fine artists he had other plans and he struggled to resist this calling until he became powerless against it. His earliest ambition was to become an advertiser. he actually recruited in an advertising firm to begin his carreer. Then he changed his mind and had a brief encounter with Accounting, courtesy his father. His desire changed again to Architecture, then to Planning. He decided to put everything aside and become an academic. That also changed and he went into business, transporting was a major issue in Ghana. But that same inner dissatisfaction and struggle moved him on into public service where he worked with the national broadcaster, Ghana Television, for an entire decade as a set designer. Mills often executes his works using oil on canvas, to express himself, exhibiting his diverse style. His anthropological compositions offer a cropped, but intriguing, window into typical West-African life. His voyeuristic approach lingers his audience towards a separated world. His subject matter and controlled impressionistic manner illuminate familiar West-African scenes. Mills shows his expansive talent in other works that explore his folklore skill, using schematic symbols designed in an asymmetrical grid-like plan.

Mills upholds his notoriety as a leading contemporary artist of Ghana, contributing his works to countless exhibitions in both Accra and London. He has exhibited in both Ghana and abroad.
